What Virechana is?

Virechana is a medicated purgation therapy which is meant for expelling out vitiated dosha and Mala (toxic metabolites) through the anal passage. This Panchakarma therapy is indicated for Pitta related disorders.  

How it is done?

Before Virechana, as a preparatory process the patient is administered with oil/ghee everyday with an increasing dose for up to seven days (until the stool becomes oily). Also the patient is given oil massage (abhyanga) and fomentation (swedana). Then on the day of Virechana after abhyanga and swedana the patient is given an herbal decoction to drink. Then within 1-2 hours the process of purgation starts. After the procedure is over the patient is advised to take rest and follow a special diet for 3/5/7 days.
